What is a DVT scan?

Deep Vein Thrombosis ultrasound scan is an essential way to diagnose whether there is a blood clot in the veins and check for a normal blood flow through it. DVT is a very dangerous condition and it has to be diagnosed as early as possible in order to prevent serious health complications or even death, in some cases.

What are the DVT symptoms?

Symptoms of DVT in the leg are:
  • throbbing or cramping pain in 1 leg (rarely both legs), usually in the calf or thigh
  • swelling in 1 leg (rarely both legs)
  • warm skin around the painful area
  • red or darkened skin around the painful area
  • swollen veins that are hard or sore when you touch them

These symptoms can also happen in the arm or abdomen if that’s where the blood clot is.

How is the DVT scan performed?

You will be laying down in a comfortable position during the scan. Ultrasound gel will be applied to the area that needs scanning and the Consultant Radiologist will be talking your though his findings.
