FAQ answered - Liver & Upper Abdomen Scan questions

What is a Liver and Upper Abdomen scan?

This is an ultrasound screening using high-frequency sound waves to obtain insights and images of your upper abdominal area and the following organs:
  • Liver
  • Gallbladder
  • Spleen
  • Pancreas

These organs are then thoroughly checked for cysts, stones, masses or any other irregularities or abnormalities. This scan is entirely safe, painless and has no side-effects.

How is the Liver and Upper Abdomen scan performed?

You will be laying down in a comfortable position and asked to pull up or remove your shirt to expose the upper abdominal area.

A small amount of water-based ultrasound gel is then applied to the skin and the ultrasound probe glides across the abdomen, scanning and recording images.
The Doctor will explain the images as they go along and will discuss the results with you immediately after.

What will the scan examine?

The scan will examine the above mentioned organs and will assess them for:
  • abdominal pain or distention (enlargement)
  • abnormal liver function
  • enlarged abdominal organ
  • kidney stones
  • gallstones
  • abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)

Ultrasound may also be used to provide guidance for biopsies by applying the Doppler ultrasound in order to check for any:
  • blockages to blood flow
  • narrowing of vessels
  • tumors and congenital vascular malformations
  • increased blood flow, which may be a sign of infection

What is included:

  • An immediate and full medical diagnostic report
  • High resolution digital images
  • Short consultation regarding the results
