In today’s world, taking care of your health is a matter of common sense. Whether you are experiencing any problems or not, the older you get, the more important it becomes to regularly check your health.
Unfortunately, more and more young people are affected by certain conditions, the early diagnosis of which could prevent more serious consequences later on. One such condition is testicular cancer, which is very often diagnosed in young men as well. That is one of the main reasons to regularly have precautionary testicular scans, even when the symptoms are not apparent.
What is testicular ultrasound?
Testicular scan is a non-invasive ultrasound scanning technique. It is a regular medical procedure performed in hospitals or private medical practices, such as Private Ultrasound, and is known not to have any side effects.
Its main aim is to check scrotal sac for any signs of testicular cancer by sending sound waves through the tissue with a transducer probe. The waves pass through the tissue if it is liquid or bounce off it if solid. The returning waves are displayed on a screen in the form of a black-and-white image, so your Doctor can interpret the results right after the scan.
Why do a testicular scan?
There are several reasons to have this kind of scan.

- If you are experiencing the pain of unknown origin and you want to identify its cause.
- If you noticed lumps or swellings that did not exist before and you want to check their origin to make sure if they are infections, cysts, benign causes or lumps, or malign testicular cancer.
- If you have already had a testicular scan and you need to repeat the procedure for peace of mind.
How is a testicular scan done?
Testicular ultrasound scan does not require any special preparation prior to your appointment.
Since it is completely non-invasive, there is no need for a full bladder. Before the scan, you will be given all additional items, such as a hospital gown, towels, paper tissues, etc. when you arrive to your appointment.
You will be asked to lie down on your back on a padded table and reveal your abdomen and groins. If necessary, towels and paper tissues will be given to you. The Doctor will lubricate your skin with gel and gently glide the transducer over your scrotal sac. Some discomfort may be present in case you already have some pain in your testes. The scan usually takes up to 20 minutes, but bear in mind that you need to stay calm and not move during the procedure. Any movement may affect the results or prolong the scanning duration.

Taking care of your health is an unwritten rule, so it is advisable to visit your GP on a regular basis. Testicular scan is a health check that is used to diagnose one particular condition, but there are other private ultrasound scans available in London.
